Description
Originally named the Njord, the Polar Star was built as an icebreaker. She was meticulously maintained and operated by the Swedish Maritime Authority until 2001, when she was converted into an Antarctic expedition cruise ship. The vessel has been classed with DNV as a SOLAS compliant passenger ship. She has an ice rating of 1A. Polar Star is large enough to voyage to remote areas in comfort and small enough to enter out of the way coves.
She carries 105 passengers in her present configuration, with 47 exterior cabins. She has a separate panoramic lounge, as well as a full passenger restaurant. All cabins have their own bathrooms, closets, writing desks and chairs. Polar Star is also equipped with a lecture hall, a small gym, a library and a bar.
Economical diesel-electric propulsion enables her to run on one engine at 11 kts and with the second engine online, it obtains speeds over 14 kts. There are four ship service generators providing power at 440V/ 220V/ 110V at 60 hz.
